Psalm 127:3 says, "Lo children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward."
On June 23, 1948, Bertha Pearl Scott Thompson was born to the late Thomas Collis Scott and Geneva Tudmon Scott. She was the eldest of eight children.
Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
From an early age, Bertha Pearl was dedicated to the Lord and was baptized at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she remained a member until her death. She always had a love for Christ and his Church. As a youth, she was involved in Christian Education. She sang in the choir and attended Sunday School and other church activities. As she grew older, her activities expanded to being the president of the choir, a member of the Mission Society, and she served as secretary of the Women Sunday School class. Bertha Pearl loved to sing and in addition of being the choir president, she became one of its soloists, often leading many of the Gospel Songs favored by the congregation.
Bertha Pearl's interest, commitment, and devotion increased to interest in the religious community. She became a member of the City-Wide Singing Convention. Bertha Pearl was appointed as treasurer of the Women Auxiliary under the presidential leadership of Sister La Dora Coleman Boatner. After President Boatner's death, she retained her position as treasurer under the present President Sister Effie Land.
Ephesians 5:31 states, "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto
his wife, and the two shall be one flesh."
Bertha Pearl was united in Holy Matrimony to Professor Lloyd Kay Thomas, Jr. To this union, a beloved and precious daughter "Mechell Thompson" was born.
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of God's Plan, "For I know the plan I have for you" declares the Lord, "plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plan to give you hope and a future."
As she did in seeking Christian education, Bertha Pearl realized the value of a secular education. It became a path to securing her future, enabling her to contribute to the welfare of young children and to community enrichment.
Bertha Pearl began her informal education at the JH Rowe Elementary & Rowe High School. Chief among her scholastic achievements was being a member of the Rowe High School Octet, a singing group of gifted singers. She was a member of the basketball team and a band member.
After graduating from Rowe High School, Bertha Pearl attended Texas College, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education / Arts. She later attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas, earning certifications in Special Education (1972-1973); Texas Teacher Certification in Elementary Education (Summer 1973); Bertha Pearl completed her formal education in 1984 when she earned her Master of Education in Elementary Education from Stephen F. Austin University; Bertha Pearl was employed as an Early Childhood educator by the Burkeville ISD from 1971-1975; She then became employed by the Jasper ISD as an Elementary Self Contained Teacher in Reading, Social Studies and Math, and she worked in this capacity from 1977-2008.
Bertha Pearl's professional activities and affiliation were numerous and included: First & Third Editions of Who's Who Among America's Teachers 1992, 1993 respectively; Career Ladder II & III; Member of TSTA; and a Charter Member of Top Ladies of Distinction.
Proverbs 31:10 & Proverbs 31: 16 sums up Bertha Pearl Scott Thompsom life. They read, "Who can find a
virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies" and "let her own works praise her in the gates."
Bertha Pearl Thompson will always be remembered for her commitment to her Christian faith; love for her family; love for gardening, shopping, singing, clothes, and hats; her allegiance to the children she taught; and her devotion to the Church and Choir of Bethlehem Baptist Church, which will be sorely missed and cherished.
Bertha Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Geneva Tudmon Scott, and two brothers, David Wayne Scott and Charles Wayne Scott.
