Charles
Rencher
Jul 5, 1949 — Jun 16, 2026
Charles Gregory Rencher was born in Newton, Texas, and raised in the Liberty Community of Newton, Texas, where he was the first and only child born to James Rencher, Sr. and Ora Lee Knight — a beginning that would shape a life marked by faith, family, and an unmistakable drive to build.
Charles attended J.B. Kerr High School for four years before becoming part of the first class to integrate Newton High School — a milestone that revealed, even in his youth, the courage and quiet trailblazing spirit that would define his life. He went on to North Texas State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and became a charter member of the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. On the North Texas State campus, he met Alberta in 1967. They married and shared two daughters, Cheryl Jamila and Toni Michelle, who carried forward his vision and his heart.
Charles was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren he adored beyond measure. Whether coaching his daughter's little league basketball team, leading his grandsons to a flag football Super Bowl victory, or unapologetically telling them to "shoot the ball every time," Charles was, in every sense, the embodiment of "daddy ball." He even took a brief turn coaching his youngest grandson's soccer team. He introduced his grandchildren to golf—a game he had first picked up to make business deals and grew to love as a lifelong hobby. He planned epic, multi-family ski trips to New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and Canada, turning every outing into an adventure the whole family still talks about. And no road trip across Texas was complete without a detour in search of the very best barbecue the state had to offer.
Professionally, Charles was a man of vision and enterprise. He began his career as an accountant with Tenneco before stepping fully into real estate, where his entrepreneurial spirit truly soared. He opened a Century 21 franchise, Pacesetter Properties, building a team of dozens of realtors, and later expanded his footprint with a second office, Horizon Southwest Properties, which grew to include appraisal services. As a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser, Charles managed valuations for METRO Houston, the FDIC, and the U.S. Department of the Interior, and he later served as a Leasing House Coordinator for the U.S. Coast Guard.
As a real estate broker, he helped hundreds of families realize the dream of homeownership for the first time. As a developer, he invested across the state of Texas, leaving his mark on communities far beyond his own. He also served on the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority Board of Directors and was deeply engaged in local politics — serving as a campaign manager, advisor, and fundraiser, most notably managing his daughter's historic and successful campaign to become the first female African American judge in Fort Bend County, and her successful re-election four years later.
Charles accepted Christ at an early age at Liberty Baptist Church in Newton, Texas, where he first learned the foundation of faith that would guide him throughout his life. In 1980, he became a member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as part of the Courtesy Corps and helped plan and coordinate the WABC Inner City Visions Golf Tournament for several years.
Charles will be remembered as a kind, generous, and fun-loving father and grandfather who delighted in spoiling his children and grandchildren and cherishing his friendships. He was a visionary and a connector, a man with a tireless work ethic, and a father who beamed with pride watching his daughters grow into devoted mothers and accomplished professionals in their own right.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ora Lee Jones, and his sister, Juana Rencher. Charles leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters, Cheryl Jamila Hicks and Toni Michelle Wallace (Quinton); his siblings, Kathy Horn, David Hadnot (Charmayne), Allen Hadnot (Maggie), Eleanor Baker (David), Paul Jones (Melissa), Rhonda Williams (Eric), Ryan Reeves, Jimmy Rencher, Juana Rencher, Geraldine Rencher, JaLyna Laney, Robert Rencher (Anita), D'Andrea Rencher-Sanders; his six beloved grandchildren, Clarke Kenedie Hicks, Sydney Rose Wallace, Luke Alexander Wallace, Charli Renae Hicks, Logan Henry Wallace, and Henderson Dean Hicks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives he forever enriched.
