A Portrait of a Life Well-Lived
Our Beloved Matriarch

Connie Glenn Fillyaw was born on March 10, 1934, in Jasper, TX to parents Jesse James Glenn and Agnes Reeves Glenn. Connie was raised in a Christian home and Christ has always been at the forefront of her life, invoking a spirit of love and willingness to serve God. She was the seventh born child of fourteen siblings and thrived in a loving community of extended family and caring neighbors.

Connie excelled in her studies, was a very quick learner and an avid reader. She also possessed a quick wit and great sense of humor. At an early age, Connie taught herself to create and design beautiful clothes. She also taught herself the art of cooking meals from scratch for her family. Her father always complimented her by saying "nobody can make German chocolate cakes and sweet potato pies like Connie". She attended J.H. Rowe High School, graduating class of 1952. While in high school, Connie helped her father in his timber contracting business as his part-time bookkeeper.

She was united in holy matrimony with Huey Fillyaw November 1 st , 1952. Huey and Connie made their home in the Bevilport Community and recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. From their union came the birth of four children, whom she adored.

Huey and Connie attended the historic Dixie Missionary Baptist Church for nearly 70 years. Connie served as the church secretary for decades and was a member of the Dixie Mission Society and Order of Eastern Star organizations.

Connie was a known trendsetter. She was always impeccably dressed, and designer hats were her favorite fashion accessory. As a young mother, she would design her own patterns and sew matching outfits for herself and her two young daughters.

Connie had a long and successful career with Jasper Independent School District (JISD) where she was employed for over 30 years and worked on several JISD campuses. She was a wonderful educator who was truly dedicated to helping young students excel and took pride in supporting fellow staff members. She instilled excellence and pride in each student under her guidance. Connie was especially proud to mentor students and impress upon them the love of reading.

Mrs. Fillyaw was preceded in death by her parents Jesse and Agnes Glenn, son Jenkin Clyde Fillyaw, her two grandsons Anthony Clayton Fillyaw and Jesse Cornelius Fillyaw, sisters Alice, Bettye, Azzie Lee, and Ernestine, brothers Wallace, Tommy, Michael, Walter, Jesse Frank, Robert Edward and Willie "Plutt".
