Cpl Oresus
Stewart
Sep 3, 1929 — Aug 11, 1950
Orestus Marion Stewart, the youngest of twelve children, born to the late Willie W. Stewart and
Mattie Rogers Stewart on September 3, 1929, in Jasper County, Texas.
He attended school in Magnolia Springs, Texas. Upon completion, he enlisted in the United States
Army November 17, 1947. During the Korean War, Orestus served in the Medical Company. His Rank:
Corporal Unit: 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On August 10, 1950, he was part of a task
force directed to defend the city of P'ohang-dong and Yonil Airfield, South Korea, from an impending
attack by the North Korean People's Army. Much of the task force reached Yonil shortly before midnight;
however, during the early hours of the following day, NKPA forces ambushed part of his group.
Corporal Orestus Marion Stewart departed this earthly life August 11, 1950. Location of Loss: Vicinity
of Kyong-JU, South Korea. Corporal Stewart was missing in action. Conditions at that time prevented
the recovery of his remains. In April 1954, Army personnel and South Korean citizens recovered a set
of remains near Pugni-dong, South Korea, later designated X-5495 Tanggok, from a shallow grave. The
Central Identification Unit compared X-5495 to all unresolved U.S. casualties from the general area
of recovery, but the remains could not be identified. They were transported to the National Memorial
Cemetery until they were disinterred on November 21, 2022 as part of a DPAA's Korean War Project for
analysis. Based on the laboratory analysis and total circumstantial evidence available, the previously
unidentified set of remains was found to be that of Stewart.
On November 26, 2025, after seventy-five years, the United States government confirmed that the remains
were those of our beloved Corporal Orestus Marion Stewart.
Today, long at last, he comes home. We lay him to rest with the dignity he earned and the peace his family
was denied for far too long.
He leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Your family has waited a lifetime for this moment.
