England Twine,
Jr. "Poncho"
Feb 15, 1942 — Jun 19, 2023
England Jr. was born on February 15, 1942, in Newton County to the late Bertha (Kyle) and England Twine, Sr. He was the oldest of four children. England joined Zion Hill C.M.E. Church in the Jamestown Community at an early age, under the leadership of Reverend Butler. The Church was later renamed Zion Hill United Methodist Church, to which he served as a Steward for the remainder of his life.
As a child, England admired a 1950's TV series called "The Cisco Kid", a western cowboy with a fun sidekick named "Pancho". It was then that his parents affectionately began to call their fun and humorous son "Poncho," the nickname he was known by forever.
England attended Jamestown Elementary and graduated from Wiergate High School in 1959. He then enrolled in Tyler Barber College, a black-owned barber school in Tyler, Texas, and graduated with his barber license in 1962. On June 13, 1963, he united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Hazel Marie Green, and to this union three children were born. After being a devoted husband for 53 years, Hazel preceded him in death in 2016.
Beginning in his young adult years, England lived a multi-faceted life filled by occupying numerous roles and titles. He enjoyed fishing as a hobby, had a unique handyman skillset with electrical and carpentry abilities, led organizations, was a faithful employee at his job, became a well-known barber extending over multiple counties and generations, a leader and organizer in the church– all while being a pillar for his family.
The Woodyard: When England returned from college, providing for his family was his priority. While seeking permanent employment, he briefly worked in Jasper with local businesses. In early 1967, England found out from a friend about a hiring opportunity with a company called East Texas Pulp and Paper Mill in Evadale, Texas, where he was hired later that year. England worked in the Woodyard as an operator. He had many job duties such as unloading log trucks, stacking logs, and being a crane operator for many years. He was a well-known, friendly co-worker who became very knowledgeable at his job and took pride in having high quality work performance and a dedicated work ethic. He was able to advance into a supervisory role, allowing him to share his expertise with younger generation mill workers. East Texas Pulp and Paper Mill underwent many name changes during England's employment tenure including Temple-Eastex, Temple-Inland, and Westvaco. England retired from Westvaco in 2005 after 38 years of service.
The Barber Shop: Most notably, people will remember "Poncho" as their barber at Twine Barber Shop. With entrepreneurship in his blood, Poncho returned from college as a licensed barber, and desired to have a Barber Shop next door to his mother's store and juke-joint. From the 60s, Poncho built a wellknown barbering brand by cutting hair at his barber shop on his days off and on the alternate shift when he wasn't working in Evadale. Yes, when he was on days, he'd cut at night... and when he was on nights, he'd cut during the day. Later partnering with his daughter Robin, the "Twine Barber Shop" was renamed "Twine Barber & Beauty", becoming a staple hair salon and barber shop in the area for over 40 years. He retired from cutting hair in 2018 after 56 years.
The Church: England remained a faithful Steward to his home church. Zion Hill United Methodist Precious Memories Church was later renamed the Jasper Circuit United Methodist Church, and England served faithfully under all pastoral leaders including Reverend Douglas Wright and Reverend Dr. Sandra Wright. Although he was reared from birth by a mother with deep musical roots, it wasn't until England reached the age of 19 that he publicly sang his first song, "Serving the Lord, Will Payoff Afterwhile". The reaction he received from the audience during the song initially came as a shock to him and caught him by surprise. But that didn't last long because after this performance a lifetime of making his own name in musical worship began.
In the early 1970s, England was a co-founder of the "Jamestown Jubilees" with Mae Ruth Adams, C.W. 'Brut' Land, Jewel Mattox, Mildred Fowler, and his sister, Deborah "BoBo" as their musician. In the 1980s he joined James 'Big Buddy' Mattox, Johnny Mitchell, Emerson 'Buddy' Holmes, C.W. 'Brut' Land, and others to sing Quartet Style as the Newton County Male Chorus with Mrs. Roxie Holmes as their musician.
To continue the work started by his mother, Bertha, and uncle, Walter Kyles (who formed the original Jamestown Choir), England took on the leadership role for continuing to grow the Jamestown Community Adult Choir, and later formed the Jamestown Community Youth Choir in the early 80s. He continued to build the Jamestown Youth Choir through the early 90s until its merger with the Jasper Circuit Youth Choir, but the Jamestown Community Adult Choir continues rendering in song at Homecomings and community functions to present day. He also continued hosting the annual "Valentine's Musical, with Love"; a gospel music birthday celebration started by his mother to honor Poncho and his Uncle Walt. The musical, with oftentimes standing-room only crowds, became a tradition that lasted over 60 years. The latest celebration was in February of this year.
The Community: England was active in the community. He was elected to the school board of the Burkeville I.S.D. Board of Trustees for over 20 years in the 1970s and 1980s. He was an original officer of the Jamestown Water Supply Board beginning in the 1980s, holding all executive officer positions throughout the years, most recently as President, and remained on the executive board at the time of his passing. He served as the Jamestown Homecoming Vice President for many years, later being elected Homecoming President of the Pine Hill Cemetery & Church in 2005, and continued to do so until his health failed this year.
Poncho's favorite hobby was fishing. He owned multiple boats and would take his friends, family, and wife's friends for a day or night of fishing on many different lakes. He enjoyed meeting with friends, such as Mr. Kemper Davis, for hours of fishing whenever time permitted, coming home with plenty of fish and fun stories to tell.
On Monday, June 19, 2023, England transitioned from labor to reward. His wife, Hazel, parents, England Sr. and Bertha, sister, Margrett, and one grandson, Princeton, all preceded him in death.
England leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters, Robin Price (Ronald) of Jamestown, Texas, and Cecilia Gosey of Fort Worth, Texas; sons, Terry Twine (Anita) of Jamestown, Texas, and Victor Twine (LaTonya) of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Deborah "BoBo" Shankle (Willie) and Mattie Sue Hawthorne (Thomas), both of Jamestown, Texas; sister-in-law, Charlotte Hunter; brothers-in-law, Robert Brooks of LaPorte, Texas, and Billy Hunter (Darlene), and Thomas Hunter (Debra), both of Jasper, Texas; special friends, Mr. Al Green, Mr. J.T. Tukes, and Mr. Steve O'Gilbert; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
