Gene Henry Davis was born on September 5, 1938, in Newton County, to the late Mr. Eddie Davis and the late Ora Pierce Hines.

In his early years, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church and later moved his membership to the New Greater Macedonia Baptist Church, under Reverend Wesley Renfro. He attended public school and graduated from Wiergate High School in 1956. During this period, he met and married the late Ms. Walter Mae Spikes on June 22, 1957, and to this union, four children were born: Alice, Gloria, Ronald, and Richard. After graduating, he went on to work numerous jobs, even owning his own logging business until his health failed in 1985. After retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing dominoes, dancing, taking trips to the casino with his best friend, Joe Hickman, Sr., and being the community father to others.

Gene Davis departed this life on July 27, 2022, in Newton County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Davis and Ora Hines; wife, Walter Mae Davis; son, Ronald Davis; brother, James Monroe Fowler, Sr.; and brother-in-law, AJ McCarter.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory: two daughters, Alice Faye Davis (Austin) of Wiergate, Texas, and Gloria Jean Davis of Austin, Texas; son, Richard Andrew Davis (Rebecca) of Wiergate, Texas; daughter-in-law, Theresa Davis of Orange, Texas; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two godsons, Peter Bowie of Houston, Texas, and Clifton Joe Spikes of Jasper, Texas; sister, Emma Lee McCarter of Wiergate, Texas; sister-in-law, Pricilla Fowler; two stepsisters; four stepbrothers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
