Obituary

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. –John 14:1-3 KJV

Hattie Lee Shaw was born in 1939 to Lorenza and Ethel Shaw in Jasper, Texas who both preceded her in death. She was the seventh of ten children (5 boys and 5 girls) of which seven preceded her in death (Prentis Shaw, Lawrence Shaw, Robert Shaw, Alvin Shaw, Laurella Shaw Thomas, Ethel Shaw Brame, Jewelene Shaw McNeil). She graduated from J. H. Rowe High School. Hattie continued her education at Huston-Tillotson (College) University in Austin, Texas where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and various other professional organizations. She later earned graduate credits towards a master's degree at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas and traveled abroad (1973) for cultural artisan studies in the world's second-largest and second most-popular continent Africa. She was adventurous and had a thirst for learning new things like photography and photo development, pottery making, antiques, carving, weaving, technology and more.

In the mid-1960s she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she taught elementary school for more than two decades in Laguna, New Mexico. Her greatest personal satisfaction came from watching a student's face at the moment of understanding, or when a skill was finally mastered. She made a conscious effort to get to know every one of her students, to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and to challenge people to achieve their potential. Upon retirement and moving back home, she pursued her entrepreneurial side as well as displayed and
sold her artisan work down town Jasper, Texas in The Heart of Things.

Hattie professed her faith at an early age, and united with Evergreen Baptist Church in Jasper, Texas. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, she united with Grant Chapel AME Methodist Church. Some years later returning to Jasper, Texas she united with Moore Chapel CME Church and continued her service actively as a member of South Wesley Chapel AME Church in Houston, Texas.

Hattie was faithful to her church, never refusing a task, but doing whatever she was called upon to do for the Master. She was a loveable character that diligently worked to provide Christian education for all ages attending Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Monthly Puppet Shows. She served in various positions at times as the church secretary, soloist in the choir, Sunday School teacher, and with church beautification gardening, etc. She gave her all for God, for her family he gave to her, and now she is added to his great and blessed family in the world beyond our vision. On April 16, 2021, she answered the call of the Heavenly Father, and moved to the mansion prepared for her, where she is enjoying a union with loved ones who have outstripped us to Heaven's shore.

Hattie leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life: one devoted sister and brother Patricia Shaw of Houston, Texas, Lindberg Shaw (Cleo) of Austin, Texas, dutiful nieces of Missouri City, Texas, De'Ivory Thomas Adams (Ronnie), Desiree' Adams, Raniah Adams (Eric Johnson), Annalise Adams, and generations of over 70 loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, classmates and others who also loved and cherished her.
