Obituary

Maggie enjoyed sewing, Court TV, boxing, and football, especially when she and Luck were watching together. She loved her family fiercely and poured her heart into every role she held. And if you knew Maggie, you knew the woman could cook. Not just everyday meals, but that good holiday cooking. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, her kitchen became a full-scale dessert operation. Cakes, pies, cookies, and those famous homemade biscuits that could make you rethink your priorities, she made them all with love and a little side-eye for anyone trying to sneak a taste too early. The family didn't just look forward to her sweets; they counted down to them. She passed that love for cooking to her grandchildren, who brought her their dishes like contestants on a cooking show. Maggie would taste, pause, raise an eyebrow, and deliver her verdict. If she said, "That's good," you felt like you'd won a blue ribbon. If she said, "Hmm ...try again," you went right back to the kitchen. Her standards were high, but her love was higher. And then there were the peppermints. The peppermints. Maggie asked for peppermints daily, several times a day, and sometimes several times within the hour. If peppermints had a loyalty program, she would've been Platinum Elite. Truly, she could've invested in peppermint stock and retired off the dividends. Everyone kept a stash nearby, in their purse, car, kitchen drawer, anywhere close because if Maggie wanted a peppermint, she wanted it right then.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Charles "Luck" Mattox; her children Ursula, Duane, and Ramona; her grandchildren Terri, Deonte', Melanyse, Cam'Ron, and D'Kobe; her great-grandchild Mason; and her godchildren Tia and Ariel. She is also survived by her sisters Gloria (Marvin, preceded in death) and Linda (David, preceded in death); her brother Jimmie Jr. (Shirley); her sister/cousin Charlie Mae; her sisters-in-law Rosemary (Claudell), Lillian (Cecil Sr., preceded in death), and Janet; and her brother-in-law Carl.

She is preceded in death by her brother James and sister-in-law Velma. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and lifelong friends join together in celebrating a life well lived. Maggie lived boldly, loved deeply, and fought fiercely for her people, her joy, and her life. Her spirit, strong, funny, brilliant, and wonderfully unbothered, will continue to shine through every story told in her honor.
