Modestine Bennett
Thomas
May 12, 1937 — Aug 15, 2023
Modestine was born May 12, 1937, in Call, Texas, to Anderson and Bessie Bennett. She was one of
eighteen children. She attended Call Elementary and High School. She was very smart in her books and
loved sports.
Modestine accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She lived her life praising God for his
goodness and many blessings. I am sure many of you remember her favorite phrase upon greeting… If
you asked Sister Modestine "how are you?" Her answer was always… "BLESSED!" She was a member of
Greater Old Field COGIC for over 66 years until her health declined but she never forgot her titles.
She married the love of her life, A.J. Thomas, on April 15, 1957. To this union two children were born, Angiela (Crickett) and Dwight. Modestine worked for MHMR in Kirbyville, Texas, for many years and loved the patients there as if they were her own. She enjoyed the outside life including fishing, but as you know her very favorite was "The Black History Programs" each year in February. I am sure she pressured everyone in her path one time or another to be in her "Black History Program". She wanted to be certain all the young people in our area knew where they
came from. Modestine's life was "God" and "Church". She lived it.
On August 15, 2023, Modestine received her "WINGS". Finally, she will meet the man she loved and lived her life for. His name is JESUS. Now, she is TRULY BLESSED.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Thomas; parents, Anderson and Bessie Bennett; and siblings, Lillie Mae, Willie Mae, Kathrine, Erma Lee, Lonnie, Elsworth, Carl, Talmadge, Margaret,
Marlene, Geneva, Jean Evenlyn, and Roy.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Angiela Thomas Smith (Crickett), Dwight Thomas, Annie Armstrong Pope (Pam), and Kenith; grandchildren, Dameon (Squirt), Lynell, and Terrance; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Kaelynn, Reigan, Kennedy, Emory, Dameon Jr. (DJ), and Andric (Lil AJ); special daughters, Alice
Marie and Sherita Harris Woods; special sons, William Earl Reliford (Bill) and Elgin Ray Thomas; Aunt Irene; siblings, Vonzetta Samuel, Louis Bennett and Clinton Bennett; brother in law, Jessie Thomas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
