Obituary

Mrs. Othea Jean Chaney was born to the late John Henry and Corine Joiner on October 5, 1943, in Toledo Bend, Texas. She departed this earthly life March 28, 2023, at Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital. Othea grew up in the Toledo Bend Community. She attended school in the Burkeville and Wiergate communities where she graduated.

Othea united with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Toledo Bend at an early age. She was an active member there until she met and married Frankie Chaney in 1960 and moved to the Liberty community of Newton, Texas. To this union, seven children were born, Ronald, Donald, Cedric, Phyllis, Denise, Alice, and Cynthia. Mrs. Chaney became an active and long-time member of St. Paul C.M.E. Church until her health began to fail her.

Mrs. Chaney worked in the food industry for many years in the Newton, Bon Wier, and Jasper, Texas, areas. Cooking was her passion, whether she was doing it for work or just cooking for the church or the community children. Mrs. Chaney always enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Othea was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Chaney; two sons, Ronald and Donald Chaney; brother, John Henry Joiner, Jr.; sister, Lorene Watley; son-in-law, Franklin Keyes; grandson, Derrick Allen; and great-grandson, Derrick Allen, Jr.

Mrs. Chaney leaves to cherish her everlasting memories: her four daughters, Phyllis Mark of Newton, TX, Denise Sweet (Cecil) of Merryville, LA, Alice Chaney of Beaumont, TX, and Cynthia Kenebrew (Kevin) of Humble, TX; son, Cedric Chaney (Anastacia) of Beaumont, TX; two sisters, Virginia Ford of Houston, TX, and Jennie Jefferson of Houston, TX; three brothers, Leland Watley of Nacogdoches, TX, Leon Watley (Cynthia) of Jasper, TX, and Samuel Watley (Joyce) of Jamestown, TX; sister-in-law, Charlene Younger; brother-in-law, Curtis Chaney (Ida Mae); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
