Roberta
Stansberry
Feb 2, 1940 — Aug 12, 2022
Lufkin
Sister Roberta Hickman Stansberry was born February 2, 1940, in Newton County. She departed this earthly life in the early hours of August 12, 2022, at the Larkspur Nursing Facility in Lufkin, Texas. Roberta grew up in the Toledo Bend Community. She attended school in the Burkeville and Wiergate Communities, where she graduated. Roberta united with Mount Olive Baptist Church at an early age.
Later in life, Roberta attended the Lufkin Memorial Hospital Vocational Nursing School, where she obtained her Licensed Vocational Nursing Diploma/Certification. Roberta worked at the same hospital for many years, in the Neonatal/Nursery department on the night shift. She continued to work nights until she retired. Prior to her training as a nurse, she met and married her husband, Mr. Jamie L. Stansberry, and they were married for 59 years. No children were born from this union.
Roberta later joined the First Missionary Baptist Church in Lufkin, Texas, where she was a faithful member until her mother got sick. She then moved into her home until she could no longer take care of her. Roberta dearly loved her mother. Roberta also loved Toledo Bend. She always wanted to "go to the homeplace" when she could. She was especially thrilled with Homecoming every September when she could visit with family and friends she had not seen in a while.
"Aunt Roe," as she was affectionately known, was loved by everyone, especially family. She impacted their lives in so many ways. We all have our "Aunt Roe" stories. Roberta was the historian of the family. She could put it all together. She could tell you stories almost dating back to the dark ages. Roberta said she knew all this information because she used to sit at her "Mama's knee," and because she was the "baby" of the family. One of her sisters said, "she could get away with anything"; noting the time when the sisters were supposed to be keeping her, and Roberta fell off the end of the porch into a rose bush.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents, Wadie Hickman and Bertha Davis; aunts, Harriette Scott and Eddie Mae Jackson; sisters, Fannie, Glorine, Alberta, and Susie; brothers, Grant, Jeff, George, and Cleveland; nephews, Wadie, Willie, Carl, and Gene; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Sr.
Roberta leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life: a devoted husband, Jamie, along with his children and grandchildren, Miriam of Austin and Tyrone (Rhonda) of Houston, TX; a special cousin, Huey P. Scott (Barabara) of Shreveport, LA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Roberta has been a light and love in our lives. We will truly miss you, "Aunt Roberta." There are none like you, you have been our very special "Aunt."
